Why have flood insurance you ask? In these days of insuring every aspect of our lives from health to home to travel it may not always seem necessary to carry flood insurance but too much water in one place at one time can create havoc while present and leave economic devastation in its wake. Unfortunately, as more and more land is developed to accommodate our living and working lives flooding has become more and more problematic.

Increasingly Problematic Issues

Even in the 1960's flooding and the resulting damage was remarkable enough to prompt Congress to create the National Flood Insurance Program. For those living in the designated flood areas such as those walloped by Rita in Texas during the late summer of 2005, flood insurance coverage was available and required by law to anyone with a structure on a designated flood plain.

Again, why have flood insurance? Flooding isn't confined to the areas that the NFIP has decided are the real problematic zones but in all regions of the United States. Living in New Mexico I saw apartment buildings ruined by an inch of rain. When that inch of rain lands in one fell swoop in an area that receives on average 9 inches of precipitation a year the result is a flooding situation.

Global warming and the perceived weather changes resulting from it are hotly debated subjects which may or may not be applicable to the flooding issue. There are, however, certain factors contributing to increased flooding devastation that are less controversial. The world population continues to grow resulting in increased need for housing and industrial development. We've made use of every available land mass so there is now a greater likelihood that some city, town, or building will be overwhelmed by a temporary overabundance of water than ever before.

As such choosing to buy flood insurance whether you live in Texas, Washington, Maine or Ohio is in one's best interests for the prevention of economic devastation in the event of a flood and for the immediate peace of mind such coverage can bring.
